QR Codes on your printed materials are good business. Brochures, magazine advertisements, business cards, etc. with QR codes make your printed pieces interactive and appeal to the growing mobile audience. Be sure to track your QR Codes results. Find out how many people are scanning and what printed materials they are responding to. This will give you a base for your ROI and marketing efforts.
QR Codes are everywhere these days. The real question is, are people printing QR Codes correctly? If you are wondering if you’re printing your QR Codes correctly, Michelle Jollymore of QReateAndTrack.com has some help to offer you!
Make sure that your QR Code is no smaller than 1/2″ x 1/2″. If possible, it is wise to make sure that your QR Code is at least a 3/4″ x 3/4″. As the cameras on our phones continue to get better, more people will have the ability to scan smaller QR Codes. However, there are still plenty of people with phones who would have trouble scanning a 1/2″ QR Code.
Put your QR Codes on items that are easy for people to scan. A highway billboard is not a good idea.
Try adding easy directions next to the QR Code. Just having a plain QR Code on your piece is not going to attract people to scan it. It could be as simple as saying, “Scan the QR Code with your Smartphone to learn more”, or “Don’t have a QR Code reader? Download one from your App store”. You can also put directions along with your QR Code or a call-to-action. How about offering some kind of incentive for people to scan the QR Code? ”Scan the QR Code to win an iPad”, or “For more information on this event, scan the QR Code now!” would be great attention-getters.
Make your QR Code stand out by adding an image or changing up the color to make it match your design. Use color combinations that are easy to scan. When using images, make sure NOT to cover or distort the 3 squares in the corners or the QR code will not scan successfully. Dark QR Codes on dark backgrounds and light colored QR Codes also do not scan well.
Other tips: Make sure that your QR Code links to a mobile website, not to a standard desktop-based site. Shorten the destination URL when creating the QR Code and create your QR Code in a way that allows you to change the destination URL at any time.
QR Codes are one of the best ways to integrate mobile into your printed materials. We hope that you find these tips helpful as you look for ways to reach the mobile audience!
